Vent Damage from Raccoon

Raccoons are very strong and intelligent animals who can use this intelligence and strength to create lots of damage. If you are experiencing damage from raccoons call the number above to get your damage repaired and raccoon issue solved!

Raccoon Damage

The raccoon is not only a very intelligent animal but for an animal its size, it has extreme strength. The strength and intelligence these raccoons have give them the ability to create a great amount of damage. Using the expression “raccoons have thumbs” is a good way to express how their paws work. Raccoons being able to use their paws much like a human uses his/her hands makes it much easier for the raccoon to grab, pull, tear, and rip apart objects that they want to deconstruct. Due to these amazing abilities these raccoons have creates many situations in which raccoons are found living in peoples homes either in the attic or in the drywall. Once a raccoon has announced your home its home as well, it makes it a little difficult repairing these damages. You do not want to repair these damages unless you know for sure the raccoons are not inside any longer and are not going to make a return. If you wait for the animals to leave and try to repair the damages before their return, the raccoons will either reopen the opening or create a new opening in which more damage would be created. To be sure the raccoons will not be making a return visit you must bring them outside of their travel grounds into an area it is unaware of. This would bring them to unfamiliar territory and will not know the path to make a return to the property.

Soffit damage from raccoon

Raccoon soffit damage

If you have open soffit panels (much like the opening in the photo to the left) you may be at risk of having animals such as raccoons move into your home! Call County Animal Control for assistance in Raccoon Control!

During the cold season and the breeding season raccoons would prefer living in a home rather than in the wild. Obviously it is much warmer in an attic than it is out in the wild and when it comes to breeding their young, it is much safer as well. If you notice openings in your vents or roof, it may be the work of a raccoon creating its entryway to your attic. If you see these openings or hear noises at night it would be wise to get started on raccoon control. In order to take control over the situation you first need to remove the raccoons from the home. You can fix the vents and entries all you want but as long as the raccoons are still on the property, the raccoons will have control of the situation and keep making entryways. Capturing the animals and removing them from the property will give you control of the situation. After being sure you have removed all the raccoons, you need to repair the damage done by the raccoons immediately. This eliminates the chances of other raccoons or any other animal making a move in to the home. For assistance in raccoon control feel free to call:

Raccoon Cage Trapping

A raccoon exclusion can be done with sprays, repellents, or even predator urines. This exclusion is done by taking the repellent or predator urine and spraying it in the territory that the raccoon is currently in. Once the repellent or urine is caught by the raccoons nose  of the raccoon it is supposed to fear or discomfort it and steer the animal right on out of there. This exclusion strategy to get rid of raccoons has worked but is not always a for sure exclusion. To be absolutely positive that the raccoons have been excluded you would have to physically remove them. There are different approaches you can take when raccoon trapping. For instance cage trapping. This is a humane way of raccoon trapping. It allows you to catch a raccoon in a trap without harming the raccoon and safely removing the animal from the property and release else where. When using cage traps for raccoon, the bait you use should have two attributes to it, both visual and scent. This allows the raccoon to see the bait from a distance and want to inspect. When the raccoon comes close the scent will drive it the rest of the way. Another reason why this is good is that your doubling your chance of the raccoon finding this food. It may not see the food but will catch the scent of it or vise versa. You want to make sure the trap is secure and try to keep these traps on the ground. This will help prevent any damage the raccoon can do to objects around it while it is in the trap or even damage to the animal its self. If objects are around the trap, you may find those objects in the trap after catching the raccoon. The raccoon is very strong and they tend to pull near by objects inside the cage. Keeping the traps on the ground will also help prevent the raccoon from rolling it, the raccoon is not happy it is caught and will do what it can to get out. You do not want a trap falling from off the ground, it will hurt the raccoon and will also damage your trap or possibly hurt someone or property beneath which none of those are good scenario’s. Keep raccoon traps on the ground! To safely trap raccoon hiring a professional may be your best solution to get the job done right and lessen the worry on your hands. RACCOON

Visual:

The North American Raccoon or also known as “coon”. The raccoon has distinct features from other mammals in North America. Having its masked face, ringed tail, and thick coat of grayish fur it makes it quite easy to tell this animal apart from the other four legged mammals running around in our region.

Senses:

The raccoon is an intelligent and powerful animal. Just like a human is able to, with its front paws the raccoon is able to grab objects and stand on its rear legs. Even though long distance vision may be a little difficult, the sense of the nose, ears and touch make finding food easy for the raccoon. Its sense of hearing being strong enough to hear something as quiet as an earth worm moving through the dirt. Having strong senses in its front paws and even the tips of their claws make identifying objects easy for the raccoon even with out laying eyes on the object.

Feeding:

The raccoon is known to be a very omnivorous animal. This meaning it has a wide variety of food in its diet. Foods ranging from insects and worms, fruits or nuts, fish, eggs, easily caught prey, cat/dog food, and as many of you may have experienced…your garbage.

Reproduction:

The mating season can be in the late winter or early spring and can be somewhere around two months in length until birth. The littler size is usually from two to five kits in a batch. The kits are born deaf and blind. They open their eyes for the first time about three to four weeks after birth. The kits do not start eating solid foods until about six to nine weeks after birth. After eating solid foods the mother takes this time to show the young the way of life, feeding, housing, den areas, and by fall the group may split up. It is not unusual to see yearling stick with the group.

People vs. Raccoon:

Many people think of the raccoon as a pest. This is because many occasions people will have encounters with this animal digging through the garbage, making a disgusting mess by shredding through everything you’ve thrown in there throughout the week. Another reason may be because the animals digging up your lawn, looking for underground food. People have found raccoon’s helping themselves to dog/cat dishes outside or even letting themselves in through the dog/cat door and finding them in their kitchen. A costly encounter people have with these animals is them housing under your roof. Cases increasing from soffit panels being ripped out of the way for entry, to even the animal ripping shingles off the roof and coming straight through! From there they are able to make themselves at home, which also means having to use a laboratory. These animals do designate a certain spot in your attic to leave their feces and they are very stinky animals. Them urinating and leaving their droppings up there can cause damage to the insulation. The feces can carry diseases such as the roundworm which is caused by contaminated objects or foods entering the body. DO NOT underestimate the raccoon. This animal has impressive strength and intelligence and should be dealt with before any further issues occur. If assistance is needed feel free to call:
